HP mt44 Mobile Thin Client Unboxing and First Impressions

Got a new box in with a giant HP logo on it. Let's get it unpacked!

In the Box

We'll start with what's included. First up is the charger cable. Followed by the AC adapter. Not too big, and it looks like a 65 watt charger with a barrel style connector. And that’s not really a surprise, it’s a laptop! Then some paperwork spills out, of course. That’s pretty much all that’s included in the box. This is a business oriented device, so that’s expected.

A Look Around, First Impressions

Once it's out of its plastic wrapping we can take a look around. It’s quite light for a 14” laptop. All aluminum it looks like too. On the bottom there are some screws, a ton of regulatory info and model info, and some intake vents.

On the left of the laptop there’s a lock port, some very generous exhaust vents, a USB 3.0 charging port, and what looks like a smart card reader. On the right there’s a sim card slot, a 3.5mm headset port, another USB 3.0 port, a full size HDMI 2.0 port, an Ethernet port, HP’s dock connector, a USB 3.1 Type C Port, and the AC power input with a status LED.

The top is a just a sleek HP logo, and the back has this subtle Elitebook branding. A very attractive look if you ask me.

Opening it up reveals a very firm hinge.

After that we're greeted by this island style keyboard. It’s a bit smaller than full size, but very nicely laid out. It doesn't have a number pad, but does have a dedicated home, end, page up, page down, and delete column on the right. The touchpad is decently large and very smooth It even has a little pointing stick in the keyboard with buttons on top of the touchpad. I probably won’t ever use those, I’m not a fan.

Some subtle Elitebook branding again on the bottom left of the keyboard. Some very unique looking speaker grilles with Bang & Olufsen branding stand out up top. There’s a separate power button with LED on the top left. There’s also what looks like a fingerprint reader on the bottom right of the keyboard. I’ll have to see if that works with Windows Hello.

This screen is very rigid, almost no flexing at all. Excellent build quality here. All aluminum build.

Last thing you notice is that it has some status LEDs on the front. Power, WiFi, and Hard drive activity.

I'm also excited to say that it can, in fact, be opened one handed. It takes a light touch, but it makes the laptop feel very premium. Overall I’m extremely satisfied with this laptop on first impression. Excellent build quality and materials make this feel like a very premium device. The specs aren't too shabby either!

Especially considering that I only paid $400 dollars for this thing. I can’t wait to start using it!
